Autism Assessment at Alethia
Neuroaffirming assessment and thorough diagnostics for adults.
Short wait time
In the Danish public system, an adult autism assessment often takes over 1 to 2 years. At Alethia, you can get started within a few weeks, and no referral is needed. A private autism assessment costs from 9,700 DKK (without ADOS-2) to 13,200 DKK (with ADOS-2). We have extensive experience with late-diagnosed adults.
What is autism?
Autism is a natural neurological variation in how people experience and interact with the world. It is not a disease or something to be 'fixed'. Autism affects social interactions, communication, sensory processing, and behavioral patterns in ways unique to each individual.
Many adults, especially women and those with high intellectual capacity, receive their diagnosis later in life. They have often developed compensatory strategies ('masking') that hide their autistic traits from the world, but which cost enormous energy and can lead to burnout, anxiety and depression.
At Alethia, we offer professional diagnostic evaluation of autism in a safe, neuroaffirming environment. We see autism as part of natural human neurodiversity and work with a strengths-based approach focused on helping you understand yourself better.
How much does a private autism assessment cost?
An autism assessment at Alethia costs 9,700 DKK across three sessions (without ADOS-2). If ADOS-2 is indicated, the total price is 13,200 DKK. You pay per session and are not locked into a package.
How long does an autism assessment take?
An autism assessment at Alethia typically consists of three sessions: clinical interview, autism-specific assessment, and feedback with a written report, spread over a few weeks from first session to final report. If ADOS-2 observation is indicated, one extra session is added. We have short wait times, and you can book directly online without a referral. In the Danish public system, an adult autism assessment often takes over 1 to 2 years.
What tools are used for autism assessment?
The initial clinical interview is semi-structured and covers somatic history, medication, prior assessments and treatment, family disposition, lifestyle factors, social circumstances, upbringing, schooling, premorbid personality, and full psychopathological screening alongside an objective psychiatric assessment.
The autism diagnosis is made using AAA (Adult Asperger Assessment) or an autism anamnesis as the core structured interview, supplemented by self-report instruments: RAADS-R, CAT-Q, AQ-R, SQ-R, and Aspie Quiz.
When clinical observations indicate comorbidity or a need for further assessment, we use targeted validated instruments: ASRS and DIVA-5 (ADHD), WAIS-5 (IQ), ITQ (trauma), Y-BOCS (OCD), MDQ (bipolar and affective disorders), and SCID-5-SPQ (personality structure). ADOS-2 (internationally recognized gold standard for autism observation) is offered for complex presentations or diagnostic uncertainty.
We screen broadly because nearly all clinically referred adults with autism spectrum disorder have at least one comorbid psychiatric diagnosis over the lifetime. The most common are mood disorders (53%), anxiety disorders (50%), and ADHD (43%) (Hofvander et al., 2009).
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly at Alethia without a referral from your GP. If you are a member of Sygeforsikring Danmark (group 1, 2, 5, 6), 25 or younger, and have a GP referral, you may be eligible for a refund on assessment and psychotherapy.
How does the autism assessment work?
The process consists of the following steps, tailored to your unique situation:
Initial consultation
A clinical interview where we get to know you, understand your experiences, and explore potential symptoms. Approx. 2 hours.
AAA or autism anamnestic interview
The primary diagnostic interview focusing on developmental history, social interactions, communication and sensory processing. Supplemented with RAADS-R self-report. Approx. 2 hours.
ADOS-2 observation (when indicated)
Structured observation using ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) is added when the diagnostic picture is unclear or when symptoms are effectively camouflaged. Approx. 1.5-2 hours.
Diagnostic feedback
We review all results with you, explain our findings, and prepare a detailed report with diagnostic description.
Support plan
Individual plan with concrete strategies, possible therapy, and guidance for communication, sensory needs, and daily life management.
Why Alethia
Why choose Alethia for your autism assessment?
Neuroaffirming approach
We see autism as a natural variation, not a disease. Our assessment is strengths-based and focuses on understanding you, not on finding deficits.
Structured interview and self-report
AAA or autism anamnestic interview is the core structured interview, supplemented with RAADS-R, CAT-Q, AQ-R, SQ-R, and Aspie Quiz. ADOS-2 is offered for complex presentations or diagnostic uncertainty.
Concurrent ADHD assessment
Many adults with autism also have ADHD. We screen for both conditions from the start, so you don't end up with only half the picture.
Short wait time
A full assessment typically takes a few sessions over a few weeks. In the public system, the wait is often over 1 to 2 years.
Everything under one roof
Clinical psychologists and psychiatrists collaborate closely. If medical treatment is needed for e.g. comorbid ADHD, it can be initiated immediately.
Practical guidance
We offer practical tools for communication, relationships, and sensory needs, so the diagnosis becomes useful in daily life, not just on paper.
Lifelong strategies
Strategies and follow-up tailored to your goals and daily life, lasting well beyond the assessment itself.
Experience with late-diagnosed adults
Many of our clients are adults who have lived with unidentified autism for decades. We understand masking, compensation, and the challenges that come with it.

Who is the assessment for?
Our diagnostic process is for adults (18+) who:
- Experience persistent difficulties in social situations despite many attempts to adapt
- Have sensory over- or under-sensitivity (light, sound, touch, taste)
- Feel different from others, 'like watching the world from outside'
- Tend toward intense special interests and need for predictability
- Experience burnout, anxiety or depression as possible consequences of 'masking'
- Have received ADHD or anxiety diagnosis, but feel it doesn't explain everything
- Want self-understanding and clarity regardless of whether they receive a diagnosis

Frequently asked questions
The process begins with self-report screening (often RAADS-R, CAT-Q, AQ or other validated instruments), followed by a thorough clinical interview reviewing your developmental history, social functioning, and sensory experiences. AAA (Adult Asperger Assessment) is the core structured interview. If clinically indicated, we add ADOS-2 observation. The process concludes with a feedback session and written epicrisis. No referral needed.
Yes, many adults, especially women, discover their autism later in life. Autism in adults, particularly those with average or high intelligence, is often overlooked in childhood. Many develop 'masking' strategies that hide their autistic traits. A professional assessment can provide clarity and understanding.
You receive a detailed report with diagnostic clarification and recommendations. We offer follow-up therapy focusing on strengths-based strategies, sensory needs, communication and relationships. Many clients experience great relief from better understanding themselves.
Yes, we offer assessment and diagnostics in Danish, English, Norwegian and Swedish. Our psychologists and psychiatrists are experienced working with international clients.
Autism assessment focuses on social interaction patterns, communication, and sensory experiences, primarily through an autism anamnestic interview or AAA, supplemented with ADOS-2 observation when clinically indicated. ADHD assessment focuses on attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity via DIVA-5 interview. Many adults have both conditions, and we can assess both ADHD and autism in the same process.
Related assessments
Many adults with autism also have ADHD or other co-occurring conditions. We can assess for both in the same process.
