TL;DR
A private ADHD assessment typically costs DKK 9,000–30,000 depending on the clinic and scope. At Alethia, a full assessment including medication initiation typically costs DKK 14,300. If you are under 25 with a GP referral and a member of Sygeforsikring Danmark, you may apply for a refund.
The cost of a private ADHD assessment in Denmark ranges from 9,000 to 30,000 DKK depending on the clinic. That's a wide range, and it can be hard to understand what you actually get for your money. In this article, we walk through what an assessment typically includes, what it costs at Alethia, and how you may get part of the expense refunded.
What's included in an ADHD assessment?
A thorough ADHD assessment typically consists of several parts: a clinical interview where the psychologist maps your symptoms, life history and level of functioning. Then a diagnostic interview, most often DIVA-5, recommended by the Danish Health Authority in the national clinical guidelines for ADHD in adults (Sundhedsstyrelsen, 2015), which systematically reviews all ADHD criteria. Finally, a feedback session where you receive your diagnosis, a written report, and a treatment plan.
Some clinics add cognitive testing (e.g. WAIS-IV), which can give a more detailed picture of attention and working memory. This isn't always necessary for diagnosis, but it can be relevant when there's uncertainty about cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
If medication is relevant after diagnosis, it is handled by a psychiatrist. This is a separate part of the process and paid for separately.
What does it cost at Alethia?
At Alethia, you pay per session. You are not locked into a package, and you only pay for the sessions you need. Here is a price example for a full ADHD assessment. See all prices on our pricing page.
| Session | Duration | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical interview and screening | Approx. 2 hours | 2,900 DKK |
| DIVA-5 diagnostic interview | Approx. 2 hours | 3,500 DKK |
| Feedback and diagnostic report | Approx. 2 hours | 3,000 DKK |
| Assessment total | 9,400 DKK | |
If you want medication after diagnosis, the following is added:
| Session | Price |
|---|---|
| First psychiatric consultation | 2,500 DKK |
| Follow-up medication appointment (each) | 1,200 DKK |
| Typical course with medication (6 sessions) | Approx. 14,300 DKK |
The 14,300 DKK is a typical price example based on assessment + medication initiation + two follow-up medication appointments. Some people need additional follow-ups (1,200 DKK each) until the dose is fully stable. You pay over several weeks or months, not all at once.
Why do prices vary so much?
Private ADHD assessments in Denmark typically cost between 9,000 and 30,000 DKK. The wide range is due to several factors:
Some clinics include cognitive testing (WAIS-IV), which takes extra time and costs more, even though it isn't always necessary for the diagnosis. Clinics staffed only by psychiatrists also tend to have higher session prices than those with both psychologists and psychiatrists.
On top of that, some places sell the entire process as one package where you pay for everything upfront regardless of need. And location matters: clinics in central Copenhagen typically have higher overhead.
Ask what you actually get: Are the right diagnostic tools being used? Is there a thorough review of comorbid conditions like anxiety, depression, or autism? Do you receive a written report you can use going forward?
Pay per session or package?
At Alethia, you pay per session. This means you are not committing to a full course from the start. You pay for your first session (2,900 DKK), and then we decide together what the next step is. This gives you flexibility. If the assessment shows that ADHD is not the right explanation, you haven't paid for sessions you don't need. And you don't have to pay a large amount all at once. You can book your first appointment directly.
Can you get a refund?
If you are a member of Sygeforsikring Danmark (group 1, 2, 5, or 6) and aged 25 or under, a GP referral may make you eligible for a refund covering assessment and psychotherapy. Medication is not covered.
You don't need a referral to book with us. You can book directly. But if your GP has already given you a referral, that's a good sign, and it may mean you are eligible for a partial refund.
If you have private health insurance, you pay us directly and apply for reimbursement with the detailed receipt we always provide.
What about the public system?
The public system offers free ADHD assessment, but the Rigsrevisionen (2024) report documents a wait of 1.5 to 3 years for adults. For many, that means years without answers while ADHD continues to affect work, studies, or relationships. We cover the difference in our article on private vs. public ADHD assessment.
A private diagnosis is fully recognized by the public healthcare system. You receive a written diagnostic report that your GP can use going forward.
